Ms. Kellie Pendoley

Dr Kellie Pendoley has over 40 years’ experience as an environmental practitioner within the oil and gas and mining industries in Western Australia. It was her work with marine turtles in the early 1990s that led to a 30 year long quest to develop methods and equipment to model and quantify artificial light at night (ALAN) and to bring the issue of light pollution to the attention of regulators and the general public.

This culminated in the 2020 release of the Commonwealth Government National Light Pollution Guidelines for Wildlife on which she was Principal author. Kellie holds a BSc in Environmental Science, a MSc in Oceanography (Chemical) and a PhD in Biology.

She is a past President and Lifetime Achievement Award winner from the International Sea Turtle Society and past Vice President and Lifetime Achievement Award winner from Dark Sky International (formerly IDA).

She continues to support dark sky and sea turtle protection through her community service roles including the Australasian Dark Sky Alliance (founding board member), the WA Government North West Shelf Flatback Turtle Conservation Programme (Scientific Advisory Committee) and as a scientific peer reviewer for a range of international journals.
