The Taiwan Dark-Sky Association (TDA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the natural night environment in Taiwan. As a recognized chapter of the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA), TDA works to reduce light pollution, promote responsible lighting, and raise public awareness about the value of dark skies.
TDA brings together scientists, environmentalists, educators, and lighting professionals to promote a better balance between safety, development, and the preservation of star-filled skies.
What We Do
- Dark-Sky Advocacy: Supporting legislation and policies that regulate outdoor lighting and protect nightscapes.
- Education & Outreach: Organizing star-gazing events, school programs, and dark-sky workshops across Taiwan.
- Scientific Monitoring: Measuring sky brightness using SQM devices and building Taiwan’s night-sky quality database.
- Lighting Design Promotion: Collaborating with designers and local governments to encourage dark-sky friendly lighting (e.g., shielded fixtures, low color temperature).
Our Milestone
In 2019, Hehuanshan was certified as Taiwan’s first International Dark Sky Park — a landmark achievement for the region and a symbol of what’s possible through collaboration and dedication.
Our Vision
At TDA, we believe in “Dark Sky, Bright Earth” — preserving the night sky while keeping the ground safe and livable. Smart lighting doesn’t mean more lighting, but better lighting. Join us in creating a future where starry skies are not a memory, but a shared experience — for everyone, everywhere.
